1. The Ritual

If you’re looking for a truly bone-chilling horror movie experience, you need to watch The Ritual. This Netflix original movie has all the elements of a great horror flick: suspense, scares, and an evil that’s both lurking in the shadows and right in your face. 

The Ritual film follows a group of friends who embark on a hiking trip in the Scandinavian wilderness, to then find themselves being stalked by a horrifying unidentified evil creature that’s straight out of nightmares. As the group of friends try desperately to escape this evil existence, they begin to realize that there’s more to fear than just this thing chasing them through the woods and darkness. 

The Ritual is a masterfully crafted horror movie that will leave you with chills long after the credits have rolled.

2. Gerald’s Game

Netflix’s Gerald’s Game is a psychological horror thriller movie based on the Stephen King 1992 novel of the same title. The movie is about a woman who is left handcuffed to a bed after her husband dies of a sudden heart attack during a kinky sex game. The woman is then forced to face her deepest fears and inner demons in order to escape. 

The movie has been praised for being quite suspenseful and scary, as well as its unique take on mental illness and sexual trauma. If you’re in search of a movie that is scary, different, and unique, Gerald’s Game is definitely the one to check out.

3. 1922

Netflix’s 1922 is a period horror drama film based on the Stephen King 2010 novella of the same name. The story is set in Hemingford, Nebraska, in the titular year and is centred around a man by the name of Wilfred(Wilf) James (played by Thomas Jane), a man who murders his wife Arlette (Molly Parker) in order to inherit her property and pressures his teenage son to participate in the crime. 

However, Wilf James, later on, becomes haunted by guilt and paranoia, leading him to believe that Arlette’s ghost is haunting him. Netflix’s 1922 is a slow-burn horror movie that relies more on atmosphere and psychological terror than jump scares or gore. If you’re looking for a film that will leave you feeling unsettled long after the credits have rolled, 1922 is definitely the one for you.

4. Bird Box 

Netflix’s Bird Box is based on a 2014 novel of the same name by author Josh Malerman. The movie, which stars Sandra Bullock, is a post-apocalyptic horror thriller following Malorie Hayes, a mother who is trying to protect herself and two children from an invisible force that compels people to kill themselves. 

The film has generated a lot of discussions worldwide; some viewers praised its suspenseful storytelling, while others criticized it for its graphic violence. However, regardless of which team you agree with, there’s no denying that Bird Box is a thought-provoking film that will leave viewers talking long after the credits have rolled.

5. Fear Street Part One: 1994

In 2021, Netflix released a new horror flick called Fear Street Part One: 1994. This slasher movie is part one of the Netflix horror Fear Street trilogy and is based on a book series of the same name by R.L. Stine. 

The movie follows a group of teenagers in the town named Shadyside who are trying to solve the mystery of the ancient evil responsible for the brutal murders that have been taking place in their town for centuries which is continuing to terrorize them to this very day. The movie is set in the present time but is filled with flashbacks to the year 1994, hence, the title.

Starring: Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Julia Rehwald, Fred Hechinger, Ashley Zukerman, Darrell Britt-Gibson, and Maya Hawke.

6. Fear Street Part Two: 1978

Netflix’s Fear Street Part Two: 1978 is a must-watch for any horror fans, especially those who watched and loved the first part of the Fear Street trilogy: Fear Street Part One: 1994

This slasher film is centred around a group of teenage friends in Camp Nightwing as they uncover the dark secrets of their town while trying to escape and survive the murder spree of their camp’s possessed counsellor. While the first film focused on the history of Shadyside town, this sequel dives headfirst into the present day while constantly shedding light on the aftermath the past events of this town is causing to those who still reside in it. 

Although young, the cast truly did a top-notch job. Therefore, If you’re looking for a good scare that will leave you thinking, be sure to check out Fear Street Part Two: 1978 on Netflix. You won’t be disappointed.

7. Fear Street Part Three: 1666

Netflix’s Fear Street Part Three: 1666 is the third and final instalment of the streaming service’s adaptation of R.L. Stine‘s popular YA horror book series of the same name. 

The movie follows the origins of Shadyside’s curse in the year 2006, as well as the group of survivors in 1994 who are forced to face their fears head-on when trying to put an end to this curse. With stunning visuals and an edge-of-your-seat plot, Fear Street Part Three: 1666 is sure to please horror fans and fans of the book series alike.

8. The Babysitter 

Netflix’s The Babysitter is a teen black comedy horror movie about a babysitter who is also a member of a satanic cult that sacrifices children to the devil. The movie is set in the present day and follows Cole, a 12-year-old boy who is terrified of his babysitter, Bee. Cole discovers that Bee and her friends are part of a satanic cult that makes human sacrifices and that he might be their next victim. 

While trying to find a way to stop them as well as escape them to save himself, Cole gets into several adventurous and borderline dangerous where he discovers the braver and stronger version of himself. 

The Babysitter is a fun, fast-paced movie that will keep you guessing until the very end. Netflix did a great job of promoting the movie, and it quickly became one of their most popular titles. If you’re searching for a horror film to watch that doesn’t get too dark or deep, then The Babysitter might just be the one.

9. The Babysitter: Killer Queen

The Babysitter: Killer Queen is a sequel to the 2017 Netflix hit The Babysitter. The original movie follows 12-year-old Cole Johnson, who manages to escape his babysitter, who turned out to be a killer in a satanic cult. The sequel also continues the story of Cole, two years after the events of the first movie, who is, yet again, put in the situation of having to fight to survive against demonic enemies. 

The Babysitter: Killer Queen is a well-made scary movie with fun and unexpected twists that will most definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. So, if you’re in search of a light horror movie that excites you without terrifying you, The Babysitter: Killer Queen is the one to beat.

10. Hush 

Hush is an American slasher film with quite a unique twist. The movie follows the deaf-mute female author Maddie Young who is terrorized by a masked killer in her own house. The thing that stands out about Hush is that it is almost entirely silent. This creates a sense of suspense and isolation that is truly harrowing and not easy to handle for everyone. 

With movies like Hush, Netflix has been pushing the boundaries of horror, and it has been paying off with it quickly becoming the go-to destination for horror fans everywhere.

11. Army of the Dead 

Army of the Dead is a 2021 Zack Snyder zombie heist thriller that is sure to send chills down your spine. This Netflix original follows a group of mercenaries as they attempt to retrieve a lost cache of money from a Las Vegas casino amidst a zombie outbreak. With an all-star ensemble cast that includes Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell, Army of the Dead is a must-watch for any horror or action fans. So if you haven’t already, it is time to stream it!

12. The Perfection 

Netflix’s The Perfection is definitely not for the faint of heart. The film follows the troubled musical prodigy Charlotte who returns to her prestigious music school and encounters the new star pupil Lizzie who has taken her place. Soon enough, the two musicians are sent down a sinister path with shocking revelations and horrifying consequences.  

The Perfection is a fast-paced and intense ride from start to finish, and it will leave viewers thoroughly feeling disturbed. If you’re looking for a horror movie that will keep you up at night, The Perfection is definitely worth a watch. Just remember to keep the lights on!
